Knights with Horses

This page is dedicated to the Great War Horses of Dane Castle.  Included will be those we've lost, those we are presently training and some we hope to have trained in the future for use.  Along with each photo will be some information about each horse.

Valkyrie - A Majestic War Horse
Valkyrie:  Valkyrie was the greatest war horse the castle has ever known.  A beautiful blonde Belgian, she was raised by Mike and Cathy from 6 months old and she formed a special bond with Mike that will never be broken.  Valkyrie passed tragically at age 9 while combatting an enemy that she sadly could not conquer.  Dane Castle is and always will be saddened by the loss of our beloved Valkyrie but her presence is felt by many who visit our grounds.  Valkyrie now commands her own herd of war horses in Valhalla.

Freya:  Freya was Valkyrie's close friend.  A beautiful, gentle black Percheron, Freya would follow Valkyrie's lead.  Freya was only with us for 4 short years before she went to Valhalla to prepare for the arrival of Valkyrie a few years later.  Freya's kind spirit will forever be remembered.

Shadow:  Shadow was a friend to Valkyrie.  A beautiful, gentle black Percheron, Shadow and Valkyrie would practice their skills in the fields.  The ground would rumble under their great hooves as they charged and reared at each other.  Shadow has vowed to avenge the loss of her beloved  friend Valkyrie, and seeks to become the "Second Greatest War Horse" the castle has ever known.
   Note: Shadow is currently being used as a therapeutic riding horse and is loved by all who participate in the program.  She is just the sweetest girl alive.
Celtic Starr:  Starr is a beautiful, 11 year old,  dapple grey Quarter horse/Paint cross.  At 15 hands high, she probably won't be used regularly as a jousting horse, but will be used to demonstrate how to bard the horses for a joust and for photo opportunities.  She may be used as the Knight Marshall's horse during jousts, or as a substitute for any of the others during a joust.  A former Premarin mare from Canada, Starr has enjoyed the pampered life with her new herd since March 27, 2004.
   Note:  Starr is currently being used as a therapeutic riding horse.  She has adapted well to the program.

Realta Sunshine - Raya is Starr's daughter.  Her father is Pal, a 16.3 hand Canadian Sport Horse of Paint/Percheron/QH/Belgian breeding.  She is bay with a tiny star on her forehead.  Raya was born May 13, 2004.  At around 15.2 hands,she is just a little taller than Starr and still growing.  We hope to train Raya to be a joust horse for the castle in the future.
  { Realta is gaelic (old Scottish) for "Twinkling Star" and since she is Starr's daughter, I thought it was only fitting to name her after her mom.  Sunshine was my mom's nickname for my father, she always called him "Sunshine", and since he died in 1991, this was my way of including him in my dream. - Princess Robin }
   Note:  Raya is currently being trained as a trail horse and may be used in the future as a therapeutic riding horse.  She is adapting well to her training and is loved by everyone who meets her.
